My name is Joe Wise. I am owner of Built Wise Construction in Orlando, Florida, and today we are going to go over how to install a garbage disposal. Now we are going to hook up the waste pipes coming off the disposal. Now this is something that I usually get a lot of different types of pipe for, you look and see basically what you need, then buy couple of extras. I always buy one of these flex hose because you can normally use it in two or three different places. A long supply line like this, different types of P-traps depending on how and what are you connecting to on the wall. And then you just have to have patience and fit it altogether. So right now, we are going to hook it up.
Install garbage disposal in double sink
You don’t need a separate P-trap for each sink — both drains lead to a common trap, most conveniently located under the sink without the disposal. Most disposals have a drain outlet on the side and are easy to adapt to a double-sink waste system. You simply screw the drain extension to the side of the appliance with the screws and flange that come with it. Spread plumber’s putty generously around each hole before you screw on the fittings and tighten them with adjustable pliers.
Tighten the clips with a screwdriver. In most cases, you install the disposal by engaging it with the holder and rotating it counterclockwise though a quarter turn to lock it in place.
Sep 03, · So I currently have a cheap stainless steel sink with two drains, one with a garbage disposal which has the dishwasher hooked up to it and then the main line from the 1st drain. The 2nd drain goes into the garbage disposal and then runs into the main line.
The pipes are clear and the garbage disposal is new. Is there some way to adjust the spinning element in the disposal to make sure the drain holes inside it are fully open? Yesterday I ran the dishwasher before leaving for work and when I returned home in the evening, the sink was full of the dishwasher water. I flipped on the disposal and in seconds all the water drained. So far, I’ve done several things to try and fix this problem: Install an air-gap to prevent water from draining back into the dishwasher.

The drain system includes an air-gap fitting that prevents garbage disposal debris from backing up into the dishwasher.
How to Hook Up a Drain Line to a Sink; A double-bowl drain kit will have everything the single-bowl kit has along with a waste-Tee connection and additional length of drain line to connect both bowls to a single P-trap. If your sink has a garbage disposer, you need an additional longer section of drainpipe to connect the disposer’s drain.
The project requires some moderate do-it-yourself skills, but it can be completed in an afternoon. Next disconnect the water supply lines at the shut-off valves and remove anything else connected to the sink, such as the faucet and garbage disposer.

I talked to my plumbing guy, and he said Atlant makes a waste disposal adapter specifically for this – but they are out of Great Britain, so not readily available all over US.
Only picture I was able to find was off eBay Britain – http: Hope that helps – because this seems to be just one more case of what appear to be a monstrous joke – make a product line sinks, fiurniture, etc that does not match up with standard parts either in US or Europe, and has instructions that unintelligible and items that are incredibly difficult to put together, and see how many suckers will then pay through the nose for it because it is “trendy”. I can’t count how many times I have heard people cussing and swearing at Ikea and saying “never again!
Ahhh – cruising IKEA european website found this picture of what it looks like – does not come with the sink but says ininstructions it is required for the sink -.

You might want to place a bucket under the trap to catch any wastewater sitting in the bottom. Remove the disposal by inserting a screwdriver into the mounting ring lug and turning counterclockwise until it comes loose. Remove the ring on the sink sleeve, the sink sleeve, the flange, the fiber gasket, and the plumber’s putty.

I guess there is just no way around this. I am not the most handy dude around, hence a bit hesitant to lower the drain pipe. Maybe I can get a plumber to do that, or just remove the garbage disposal and not have one. Thanks again but if anyone else has any ideas, would love to hear them. I’ve been building the necessary Google Muscles1 by reading various web pages on how to install a disposal. They all mention that the disposal comes with an optional inlet for the dishwasher drain hose, but they never tell you why. So what in the hell is that thing for? Why would the dishwasher need to go through the disposal? The bits and pieces and chunks of food get chopped up by the disposal before going into your pipes, same as if you’d put them in the sink.
My mom’s dishwasher runs through her disposal, and she just picks the plates up from the table and loads them as is. OK, she takes out bones and such first, but she doesn’t scrape ’em. When you remove the sink drain plumbing to replace it with the disposal, you would normally need someplace to connect the dishwasher drain, and most disposal units convinently have an inlet available to do just that.
Can I add a garbage disposal to my farmhouse sink?
Drain kits come in different materials and configurations, but installing them is a snap. You have a couple of choices for drain kits: Both work well and are about equally easy to use.
A double kitchen sink facilitates cleanups in a busy kitchen, and installing a garbage disposal on one of the sinks adds functionality and improves kitchen hygiene.
Note there are actually two types of piping involved here. Item 4 is an adapter to connect these otherwise incompatible types of piping. The adapter is glued into the end of the PVC pipe and provides a compression fitting for connecting the P-trap outlet. This drainage arrangement sucks. It works, it just doesn’t work very well. The problem is with the “end outlet tee”, item 2 in the illustration above. Here’s what the innards of this part look like: As you can see, it’s not just a simple tee.
There is a partition in the middle, and it forces all the drainage from either sink through a half moon-shaped passage that’s only half the size of the full pipe. Hence, neither sink drains particularly well, even when the pipes are clean. And it’s pretty easy to get the pipes stuffed up in this area. Worst of all, whatever you toss down the waste disposer has to get crammed through that tiny passage while making a really sharp turn.
There is another type of drain for a pair of sinks called a “center outlet tee”, in which the drains from both sinks turn towards each other and there’s a tee in between with an outlet downward.

Jan 26, Advertisement – Continue Reading Below Replacing a failed garbage disposer can seem daunting. There’s the usual trepidation about electricity and water, the unfamiliar sink connection and enough drain fittings to make leaks a real possibility. Then there are the hassles of comparison shopping and the suspicion that the job could run into real money.
And finally, failed disposers don’t often leak, at least not in the beginning, so it’s easy to put things off. If this sounds familiar, you’ll be happy to know that replacing a disposer is really fairly simple. With today’s plastic waste kits, leaks are seldom a problem and the electrical connections are similarly quick and easy.
